Introducing โ€˜ourโ€™ Tom Holland

Not to be confused with the British ancient historianโ€”or even the actor of Spider-Man fameโ€”our Dr Tom Holland has his own story to tell. In fact, the British Humanist Society once mistakenly invited him to deliver their annual lecture, confusing him with the historian. Ever the gentleman, he graciously replied to explain the mix-up. As he quips with a smile, he's old enough to be the historianโ€™s father!

Born in wartime Liverpool while bombs fell on the city and his father served in the army in Egypt, Tomโ€™s early life was shaped by resilience. As a tiny baby, he struggled to survive life-sapping pneumonia. Then, at the age of eight, he was isolated in a local hospital because he had contracted a highly infectious skin disease. He was isolated for over a year and recalls being discharged from the hospital the day before Queen Elizabeth's coronation (2nd June 1962). This isolation caused his educational development to fall seriously behind that of his peer group. As a result of this, he left school at the age 15 with no qualifications. On leaving school, he trained for five years as an apprentice engineer. It was during this time of training that he experienced Godโ€™s forgiveness, and this led to a strong sense that God was calling him into Christian service. This conviction led him to attend evening classes, and he gained a range of qualifications. Once his engineering training was completed, he entered college to pursue theological study.

Following graduation from London University, he accepted a call to establish a church 25 miles south of Cambridge. It grew rapidly under his leadership, and he pastored the congregation for eighteen years. It was during these years that Tom began to discern a deeper truth: that the Old Testament profoundly shapes the New Testament far more than commonly recognised. This insight became a lifelong pursuitโ€”unlocking the vital theological link between the two testaments and transforming his understanding of scripture.

Scholar, Pastor, Mentor

After retiring from his first pastorate, Tom planted a second church in a nearby town, which continues to thrive. Alongside this ministry, he was invited to lecture in New Testament at what is now Union School of Theology, where he served for 25 years. During this time, he earned his PhD from the University of Wales, became Director of Biblical Research, and supervised over 25 doctoral candidates. His passion for scripture and scholarship birthed books that have garnered endorsements from leading voices in New Testament studies and taken him around the world as a sought-after lecturer.

A Legacy of Wisdom

Today, in his retirement, Dr Holland continues his writing and teaching ministry as Senior Research Fellow at Union School of Theology. He remains deeply committed to enriching others through biblical insight and theological reflection.

Tom is married to Barbara, and together they have three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Apiary Publishing is honoured to share the fruit of Dr Hollandโ€™s lifetime of study. We believe his work will deepen your understanding of scripture and nourish your soul.
